Perinatal Support

Compassionate Support Through Pregnancy, Postpartum, and Parenthood

Pregnancy, postpartum, and the transition to parenthood can bring profound emotional, physical, and relational changes. While these experiences are often associated with excitement and joy, they can also bring unexpected challenges, uncertainty, and emotional distress.

At Boston Psychology Group, we recognize that the journey into parenthood looks different for everyone. Our team includes psychologists who are certified Perinatal Mental Health Specialists (PMH-C), with specialized training in supporting individuals and families through the unique psychological challenges of pregnancy, postpartum, and early parenthood.

Whether you're navigating anxiety during pregnancy, struggling with postpartum mood changes, or adjusting to a new sense of identity, our psychologists provide compassionate, evidence-based care tailored to your needs.

Our PMH-C Certified Perinatal Specialists

Lucienne Cohen, Psy.D., PMH-C and Laura Frasier, PsyD are both certified Perinatal Mental Health Specialists (PMH-C). You can read more about their work, and reach them directly, through their profiles.

Understanding Perinatal Mental Health

Perinatal mental health encompasses emotional and psychological well-being throughout pregnancy and the postpartum period, as well as the broader transition into parenthood.

Although some emotional fluctuations are expected during this time, persistent anxiety, sadness, irritability, intrusive thoughts, or feelings of overwhelm may signal a need for additional support.

Our psychologists work with individuals and couples experiencing a range of concerns, including:

  • Postpartum depression and anxiety: Managing persistent sadness, worry, guilt, or emotional overwhelm during pregnancy or after childbirth.
  • Pregnancy-related anxiety: Navigating fears about pregnancy, childbirth, health, and the uncertainties of becoming a parent.
  • Perinatal OCD and intrusive thoughts: Understanding and managing unwanted, distressing thoughts and repetitive patterns of worry.
  • Birth trauma and difficult reproductive experiences: Processing challenging deliveries, pregnancy loss, infertility, and other emotionally complex experiences.
  • Identity and relationship changes: Adjusting to evolving roles, shifting priorities, changes in intimacy, and the impact of parenthood on partnerships.
  • Adjustment to parenthood: Navigating sleep deprivation, changes in family dynamics, and the emotional demands of caring for a new baby.

Our Approach to Perinatal Support

At Boston Psychology Group, we understand that becoming a parent is not simply a life event, but a significant psychological transition. Our approach creates space for the full range of emotions that can accompany this experience, without judgment or expectations about how pregnancy or parenthood *should* feel.

Our psychologists draw from evidence-based therapeutic approaches, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy, and insight-oriented psychotherapy, to help clients understand their experiences, strengthen coping skills, and feel more grounded during periods of change.

With PMH-C certified specialists on our team, we offer expertise in the unique emotional and psychological needs of individuals and families during the perinatal period.

Support for Individuals and Couples

The transition to parenthood can affect not only individual well-being but also relationships and family dynamics. Partners may experience changes in communication, emotional connection, intimacy, and the division of responsibilities.

Our psychologists help individuals and couples navigate these transitions, strengthen communication, and build a more connected and supportive foundation for family life.
